Spotify is preparing a paid AI add-on that lets subscribers take songs from its catalog and make their own versions. Turn a folk song into a dance track, make one artist "cover" another artist's hit, flip the genre entirely. People familiar with the plans say the launch is targeted for the first quarter of 2027, with a possible unveiling around the Grammys in February.

The price being discussed is about $4 to $5 a month on top of Premium. Neither the timing nor the price is final, and Spotify declined to comment.

It will be more limited than generators like Suno. This is not making new songs from a prompt, it is remixes and covers of existing tracks, and only from artists who opted in. Even if a label signed a license, the artist decides. Royalties from fan versions go to the original artists, plays of remixes count toward the original song on Spotify's charts, and remixes can go into playlists.

Licensing deals are already signed with Universal Music Group, Merlin, Kobalt and Believe. Talks with Sony Music and Warner Music are still going. Today's biggest stars have reportedly been harder to sign up than veteran acts.

Spotify seems to have decided not to fight AI music but to charge for it. A listener paying to mangle a favorite song is a whole new kind of subscriber.
