Canva's new AI redesigns anything you made from a single sentence

The new Brush model sees every layer of a layout and edits copy, colors and formats on its own. It's already live for Canva Pro subscribers.

Canva has released Brush, its own model that looks at a design almost the way a person does. It doesn't see a flat image, it sees the whole layout: layers, text, how elements sit on the page, the overall style. And it edits all of that from a plain request in chat.

You can ask for pretty much anything inside a design. Change a single line of copy, recolor an image, give it different weather or a different mood. Or update the headers on every slide of a deck with one prompt instead of clicking through them one by one. A neat extra: Brush can turn a presentation slide into an Instagram post and generally repurpose a design for another format.

Under the hood there's an agentic loop. The model writes and runs code to move elements around, then inspects what happened on the page and decides on its next step. The result stays a normal Canva design, so every element can still be edited by hand.

It was built by Canva Research, the company's 160-person AI lab. They started from a leading open-weights model, post-trained it on real design and editing tasks and added large-scale reinforcement learning. Canva says Brush is up to 69% faster than its previous design agent and 46% cheaper per edit. Those are the company's own numbers.

A week ago Canva showed Craft, its first image-generation model. So now the pairing is: Craft makes the image, Brush refines the design around it.

You can try it right now, but only on Canva Pro for the moment: open a design, go to Canva AI and pick Brush from the model dropdown. Everyone else gets it later, no date yet. Brand Kit support is also still a promise.

Verdict: designers aren't out of a job, but Canva just took the "redo all of this for Stories" grind off their plate.
