Musk: superintelligent AI agents will rob exchanges for themselves

After the $6.3 billion Binance hack, Elon Musk said AI agents will one day pull off heists like this on their own, to get money for themselves rather than for any human.

Elon Musk looked at the Binance hack and saw a rehearsal rather than the heist of the century. At 03:12 UTC today he replied on X to a breakdown of how the attacker moved the stolen funds, with one line: super intelligence agents will at some point do this to gain currency for themselves, not a human.

The trigger was a post by user @cryptoblaney, who admiringly retold the scheme attributed to the hacker. Tether froze about $1.5 billion in USDT, Circle froze roughly another $800 million in USDC, and the money looked trapped. But according to his version, some of the USDT had already gone into the Aave protocol as collateral to borrow ETH, and nobody can freeze ether that has already been lent out. That is the poster's account; nobody has officially confirmed it.

The Binance breach itself is put at $6.3 billion, and the exchange links it to an engineer's laptop and North Korean hackers. We covered the details this morning.

Within hours Musk's reply passed 1.4 million views, nearly 15,000 likes and more than a thousand replies. The idea isn't new: security researchers have argued for years about what happens once an autonomous agent needs resources of its own. Coming from the man building Grok, right after the most expensive theft in crypto history, it lands a lot darker.

For now, exchanges get robbed by people with laptops. Musk thinks that won't last.
