Who needs Office? Gemini now writes and edits your files right in the chat

Google's Gemini can now create, preview and edit documents, spreadsheets, slides and PDFs without leaving the conversation. It is live for everyone.

Google has updated the Gemini app so a file you generate in a chat can be previewed and reworked on the spot. That covers PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, plain text files and code.

The file opens inside the conversation. You can expand it to full screen and type edits yourself, like in a normal editor, or highlight a passage and ask Gemini about it or have it rewrite just that part. Google's own example: highlight a table, type "show this as a graph instead", and the table becomes a chart.

In the company's demo a student uploads photos of handwritten lecture notes, Gemini turns them into a PDF study guide, and the guide can then be edited by hand or fixed section by section with the AI.

Gemini has been able to generate and download files since April, but any change meant jumping over to Docs or another app. Anthropic already offers something similar in Claude, so Google is partly catching up here.

The catch: on phones only PDFs work for now, everything else is web only. The feature is open to all Gemini users in every language the app supports, and the announcement mentions no extra subscription.

Verdict: one less window for anyone already drafting reports and notes in Gemini, and one more worry for Microsoft Office.
