This screwdriver can see now, and AI picks the bit for you

Arrowspace S1 photographs the screw head, a neural net identifies type and size, and the case lights up the right bit.

Hong Kong's Arrowmax, which has been making smart electric screwdrivers since 2021, has shown a new model under the Arrowspace brand. The S1 does something no ordinary tool bothers with: it looks at the screw. There is an HD camera at the back end with a thin probe. The probe rests on the screw head and keeps the lens at a fixed distance, so even a tiny screw from a pair of earbuds stays in focus.

The shot goes to a phone app, where a recognition model (YOLO, trained on tens of thousands of photos of real screws) works out the drive type and exact size. For now it knows 12 common head profiles, and it all runs locally with no internet. The result is then sent to the case: its two inch screen shows the screw type and the slot with the matching bit lights up. You drop the bit in, and the driver sets a safe torque on its own so the screw doesn't strip.

The kit has 52 S2 steel bits for electronics, watches, glasses and drones. Maximum torque is 10 kgf·cm, and the 600 mAh battery is good for roughly 900 screws or 90 minutes of work. Manual torque tuning is still there through the app.

The S1 is sold through Kickstarter with early pricing from $119. The campaign has already raised over $100,000, close to ten times its goal, and shipping is promised for April 2027.

Verdict: AI has finally made it into the toolbox, and for once it actually saves your nerves.
