Cursor AI for Automation: Scripts, Scrapers and Bots with AI

Cursor is a code editor with a built-in AI agent. How an automation builder can use it: modes, project rules, sample tasks and the usual beginner mistakes.

CURSORTOOLScode in sight

Cursor is a code editor built on VS Code with AI built in. It can suggest the next line, rewrite a chunk of code on request and work as an agent: edit several files, run commands and fix errors on its own.

For automation work, Cursor's strength is that the code is always in front of you. You see exactly what the AI changes and can step in at any moment.

Three ways to work with AI in Cursor

  • Autocomplete. You type, the AI suggests the rest. Useful when you code a little yourself.
  • Edit on request. Select some code, write "add a retry if the service does not respond", get the change.
  • Agent. Describe the whole task and the AI moves through the project, creates files and runs commands. This is the main vibe coding mode.

What automation builders do in Cursor

  • Scrapers. Collecting prices, catalogues, news and reviews from websites.
  • Telegram bots. Quizzes, lead capture, alerts, assistants powered by a model.
  • n8n scripts. Code for the Code node when standard nodes fall short.
  • API integrations. Connecting a CRM, a spreadsheet and a messenger when no ready connector exists.
  • Landing pages. A quick page for an ad campaign or a search query.

Project rules: the real secret to good results

Cursor lets you write rules for the AI that apply across the whole project. These are things you would otherwise repeat in every request:

  • which language and style to use;
  • where secrets live and that they must never be printed;
  • how to handle errors;
  • what is off limits: deleting data or changing production settings without asking.

Good rules save more time than any "magic prompt".

Example: a news scraper in one evening

  1. 01Websitenews section
  2. 02Scraperthe agent writes it
  3. 03CSVno duplicates
  4. 04Scheduleevery hour
  5. 05Failurean alert
  1. Create a project folder and open it in Cursor.
  2. Brief the agent: "Collect headlines, dates and links from site X's news section. Save to CSV. Never collect the same item twice."
  3. Ask it to show what data it found on the page first.
  4. Run it, check the file, ask it to fix what is off.
  5. Ask it to add a schedule and an alert if the site does not respond.

Beginner mistakes

  • Too big a task at once. "Build me a CRM" will not work. Break it into small steps.
  • Accepting everything blindly. The agent may rewrite something that already worked. Watch which files it changes.
  • Keys in code. Tokens and passwords belong in a separate environment file only.
  • No test on real data. Everything works on the sample; real data brings empty fields and odd formats.

Cursor or Claude Code

Both can work as agents. Cursor is handier when you want to see and control the code. Claude Code is handier when you hand over a whole task and check the result, including on a server. I use both, depending on the job.

FAQ

Is Cursor AI free?

Cursor has a limited free plan and paid plans with higher model usage limits. Terms change, so check Cursor's website.

Is Cursor suitable for non-programmers?

Yes, in agent mode. To use it confidently, it helps to understand files, folders, the terminal and how to read an error message.

Which models work in Cursor?

Cursor connects models from several companies, and you can switch between them. Use a stronger model for complex tasks and a fast one for small edits.

Are there alternatives to Cursor?

Yes: Claude Code, editors with AI plugins and other development environments with agents. The principle is similar; convenience and models differ.
